Raila condemns arrest of Margaret Nyakang'o terms it politically motivated

ODM leader Raila Odinga has strongly criticised the arrest and arraignment of Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o. Nyakang'o was arrested in Mombasa and subsequently arraigned, being released on a Sh2 million bond. In a statement, Raila labeled her arrest as a politically motivated witch hunt and expressed doubts about the credibility of the charges brought against her. Raila encouraged Nyakang'o to stand strong in defense of integrity, professionalism, and the principles of good governance.
Nyakang'o faces four charges, including conspiracy to defraud, operating an unlicensed Sacco, forgery, and uttering false documents. The charges were approved by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in a letter to the DCI on November 30. Some lawmakers from Gusii claim that Nyakangó's arrest is part of a broader plot to remove her from office for exposing financial mismanagement in the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Raila asserted that Nyakang'o's arrest was anticipated and alleged that it was orchestrated to make room for a more compliant office holder. He vowed ODM's support for Nyakang'o and emphasised the party's commitment to the fight against corruption. Raila stated that the struggle would be challenging but insisted that it was a battle Kenyans cannot afford to lose. He concluded by affirming ODM's determination to lead the fight against corruption.
Nyakang'o's arrest, stemming from alleged offenses in 2016 when she was not in the position of CoB, has sparked controversy and accusations of political motivations. Lawmakers, led by Nyamira Senator Okongó Omogeni and West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka, claimed that the arrest was sanctioned by the President’s desire to initiate Nyakang'o's removal due to her independence of mind. The legislators accused the President of targeting Nyakang'o for her tough stance on government expenditure and policies. They pledged to defend Nyakang'o and questioned the timing of the charges, more than seven years after the alleged offense, and why the matter was not raised during her vetting for the CoB position.
